Newton man arrested following overnight chase

The pursuit traveled southbound on I-135 from west Newton to east Newton, then made its way to South Kansas Avenue and into Sedgwick County.

HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) - According to the Newton Police Department, one person was arrested after an overnight chase through Newton into Sedgwick County.

Officials with the Newton Police Department and the Harvey County Sheriff’s office said they were following up on a case for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon when investigators saw a vehicle, believed to be driven by the suspect, leave a location at a high rate speed.

When officers tried to conduct a stop, the suspect did not comply and a pursuit began. The pursuit traveled from west Newton to east Newton southbound on I-135, then made its way to South Kansas Avenue and into Sedgwick County.

Officials said the pursuit went back to I-135 northbound in Park City when the suspect’s vehicle reportedly ran out of gas near the 101st Street exit.

The driver, identified as 34-year-old Bryan Edward Smith, was arrested on the warrant for aggravated assault, felony flee & elude, and a multitude of other traffic and drug offenses. His bond was set at $71,000.

The Newton Police Department said the investigation is ongoing.
