Kansas Democrats push cannabis decriminalization, GOP leadership blocks a vote
TOPEKA, Kan. (KWCH) - Kansas House Democrats have been pushing two bills that would decriminalize cannabis in the state, but Republican leadership in both chambers is standing in the way.
The bills
One bill focuses on legalizing medical marijuana.
The other would decriminalize cannabis for recreational use.
A recent survey found more than 70% of Kansans support the measures, and the industry is projected to bring the state close to $1 billion.
Where leadership stands
Senate President Ty Masterson has said on the record he will never allow the issue to come to a vote in the Senate as long as he is in power. Similar bills have passed the House before.
House Speaker Dan Hawkins addressed the issue Tuesday.
“We will not take up marijuana in the house. The Senate can take it up, pass it, send it to us, we’ll pass it. But I’m not gonna take it up if the Senate won’t. The Senate needs to address it,” Hawkins said.
What Democrats are hoping for
The bills are not likely to pass this legislative session.
Kansas Democrats are holding out hope that a number of seats will flip in the upcoming midterm elections.
